Cold in the pewter sky
a wet wind crying:
somewhere-- elsewhere --
wild geese are flying.

Cold over iron fields,
pale sun is breaking:
under the sleep of stones
something is waking.

Like the poor everywhere
the poem lives, if it lives
by wit and pluck.

it looks over the trash
put out by the five senses--
those rich neighbors--

and uses what it can
like wool from an old sweater
it warms itself

by dancing, amuses
the crowds waiting in line for
movie tickets

It walks against the wind,
thinking of summer, teaching
itself to sing.
