     Poem # 9

A Poem's Justice

I always write because I
revere it and am always
attached to it. But then I
found out I had to pump
out more poems quick to
meet a publishing requirement.
Therefore; I also had to write
on demand. All of a sudden,
my writing h ad gone way
beyond my office walls without
even literally leaving yet.

I began to write for an audience
I didn't know. Wondering what
they would think months down
the road. I stopped writing for
myself and definitely stopped
writing for the poem itself. Those
poems stopped at barely rough
drafts and would not form when
they realized they were ordered to.

       Poem # 10

City Limits

The Beginning of the Tumbling (2004)

For the first time in my life
I did not know one person and
I was in a huge city filled with
people. that was my first night
in Pittsburgh. My roommate
hadn't arrived yet, classes didn't
start for two days, and initially I
can actually be very shy and wait
for someone to come talk to me first.

Then over the next five years, I began
to feel I knew the entire city. I wasn't
the typical college student who went
home every weekend, every holiday,
and every summer, as most of the girls
at my college did. I became a local. I
was there when it was just "Pittsburgh."
I worked regularly, had a long term
relationship, and could make any plans
with my best friends well in advance.
I had a blast back then.

Now I feel I am back to that first night
again, though, and it's lasting a pretty
long time - 6 months already. It's harder
to meet people when I live with my husband
instead of in a crazy dorm or over-crowded
apartment. I'm finishing my college career
online. And I'm still the same way around
people when I first meet them. I don't know
if San Diego will turn out to be another kind
of "Pittsburgh" or just another city I lived in.
