      Poem # 5

The Best Cup of Coffee

by Katie Davis-Steward
Source:
The Beginning of the Tumbling, p20

5: 10 a.m., the alarm goes off and
I am always the first one up. Quietly
smoking my first cigarette in bed
to alert my senses enough to dress
silently. I'm not afraid to wake my
husband or the dogs. They never move.
I just have to have that 45 minutes before
I get my husband up to start his day.
Brush by the bathroom to pee and take
my meds. Slink to the kitchen  and pour
the first cup of coffee to tweak the brain
vibrations, enjoy two more cigarettes and
then finish some bathroom business. Pour
the second cup and place on the warmer.
Let the dogs out with food, then have a
quick snack for breakfast and another
cigarette. Time to wake Bruce for work.
Work on that second cup and two or three
more cigaretttes while he stumbles around
the bathroom, then dresses, and finally jaunts
out the door. I  pour the third and final cup and
light yet another cigarette as I dial the same
number every morning. She answers and our
conversation always starts off. Are you busy Mom?
I wait almost two hours for that third cup every day.

Poem # 6

Rich Necessities

by Katie Davis-Steward
Source:
The Beginning of the Tumbling, p. 16

I imagine the day when we will
have plush towels that come in
matching sets, with specific
different sizes for body, hair, and
face. I don't want our barrage of
craggy and mismatched array of
faded colors anymore that are
all the same stadard size.

I imagine the day when we will
have more than three complimenting
sheet sets that actually fit the therapeutic
bed for our now encumbered minds,
knees, and backs. The thread-count
will far exceed 250. The styles, colors,
and fittings will have total sync.

I imagine the day when we will
have the "nice" set of dishtowels
and potholders. The towels will
be just right to flatter the fabulous
kitchen we finally attained. The
potholders will not have a chance
to become worn, torn, or frayed because
they will be replaced exactly when needed.
