Always have a yellow legal pad
and black pen ready. Sit and
wait  as concepts start brimming.
Write down the phrases with
notations to expand upon later,
unless  some sort of rough draft
luckily ends up on the page. Edit
throughout constantly; catch the
spelling errors, underlining words
to be ripened later, line breaks inserted
where they will usually stay. Any sheets
worthy - ripped from the tablet and the
computer is turned on. One by one,
the poems are typed in and the procedure
doesn't stop until each one is a final draft.

Poem No. 2

Juvenile Anger

Source:
The Beginning of the Tumbling (2004)  p. 94

by Katie Steward-Davis

A perfect day at the beach.
Until..., , "Mom, I'm itchy."
"What? You're fine."
"Noooo! It hurts!"
She wasn't listening.
I was mad.

Scratch, itch, pain, burning.
Yes, I was crying and yelling.
"I'm going back to the house!"
"Fine."
Mom barely looked at me.
I was really mad now.

I ran down the street in agony.
In the outside shower, the itching
started to diminsh. Then I heard,
"Arrggghhh!" My mom and family
were running frantically towards
the house. "They're on us! They're
on us,!!! They chanted away.

An evil smile appeared on my face.
I couldn't help it. They had not
believed me. I happily finished
spraying the last of those little white
pinching crabs away. I wasn't itching
anymore at all. And I certainly was
not mad anymore.
