Deer
Early that morning
my father saw deer,
a doe, buck and fawn
cornered in his headlights.
They fled--
and I thought
they are living here secretly
twisting their necks
in the vines in our yard,
nibbling at the lilies.
We thought instead
the flowers were dying,
but find this new life
being nurtured
beyond our back doorstep,
divided prints on the trail.
Deer--
swimming across Long Island Sound
from Connecticut
to the Island,
fragile, needy, beautiful
down to the whiteness
marking the center of their heads.
