Red Lanterns

by Joanne Olivieri
Source:
Red Lanterns (2005), p.1

Oh, how they kiss the winds
With a cultural embrace.
A harmonious balance
Alights the promenade
Feng Shui.
An escape to tradition
A journey of peace
And silent affirmation.
The cleansing of spirit and home,
Red Lanterns
Await the dawn
Of the Lunar New Year.
Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Background Inspiration of Joanne:
I was traveling in Hong Kong during the Lunar New Year and found red lanterns decorated all over.  One spot in particular along the Star Ferry Promenade along Victoria Harbour they were displayed  and aligned so elegantly as if they were awaiting the big day.
Seagulls At Night

by
Joanne Olivieri
Source:
Red Lanterns, 2005, p.13

A twilight canvas
barren of life
prelude to the masterpiece
hovers unseen
upon desolate skies
waiting to be fashioned.

Out of darkness
they emerge
white winged choreographers
painting circles and
breeding life.

Seagulls At Night soar,
faithfully,
indiscriminately
a free form phenomenon.

Joanne's Background Inspiration:
I was out at Pier 39 one evening working for my friend who was performing out their at the time.  It was already dark when out of nowhere seagulls began circling around the night sky.  It was the first time I had ever seen seagulls at night.  It was almost as if they were dancing to the music and putting on a show of their own.
