Poem Review:

Title of Poem:  Angeline
Author: Joanne Olivieri
Source:
Red Lanterns (2005)
Rating: 4.8 laurels out of 5 laurels.

The first time I read the poem "Angeline", I thought the poem was about a lesbian erotic poem. It is a good thing that Joanne sent me an email giving a background of her 6 poems she wants to be featured in Muses Review.

Joanne gave a background inspiration about this poem. She said that Angeline is a name of a wine producing company. Well, I am not a wine connoisseur and I don't know the brands or names of wines. People who do not know the brands of wines will most likely think that this poem is about a woman named Angeline and about lesbian relationship.

However, the poem is a very good sensory description of a wine. Joanne begins her description of a wine with her nose:

I breathe
the floral essence
of your luscious earthtones.
A full bodied intoxicant
lavished with a hint of spice.

Then, she describes the wine with her tongue.

"My tongue anticipates/
the eloquence of your/
private reserve./

A tongue anticipation  is followed by the wetting of the lips:

Your passion fruit/
tauntingly lubricates my lips/
enticing, yet smooth,/
ripe in sumptuous flavor."

Not only the tongue and the lips but also the palate experiences the pleasure:

I sip, slowly savoring/
your lush aromatic overtones/
teasing my palate/
with unbridled pleasure./

Joanne finally mentions the mouth after first citing the tongue, the lips, the palate:

Your rich sweetness/
inhabits my mouth/
with sensual exploration./

What about the throat? Joanne did not say the pleasurable effects of the wine on the throat.

Finally, Joanne consumes the wine and utters the word "Salud" which is equivalent to "Good Health" or "Toast".

I drink your passion/
to completion./
Salud!

The poem is an excellent nasal and oral description of a wine using colorful words and phrases such as "sensual exploration". "eloquence of your private reserve".

Hence, this poem is nominated Best Poem of Year 2005 for 2nd Muses Prize - Poetry.

Joanne's inspiration in writing the poem: This poem was actually written about a bottle of wine.  A friend introduced me to the Russian River Valley, Pinot Noir from the Angeline family of wines in Santa Rosa, Ca.  It has become one of my favorite wines and we always joke about it calling the wine our luscious red head.  That gave me the idea for the poem.  It was the most fun I've ever had writing a poem.  Everything just fit togerther like pieces of a puzzle.
